What the heck.

Somehow my computer managed to infect itself with a trojanthingy in the not-quite two hours I was gone this evening. And now Firefox is going buggy on me, but only on insanejournal, from what I can tell... the links are all going to ads and I'm not sure how to make it stop. The link for Corrie's journal, for instance, is http://greatfeedmill.com/?do=rphp&sub=252&b=75169215160&q=entries&orig=http%3A//wellberightback.insanejournal.com/
Maybe I'll just become a Safari girl. I'm using it now and there haven't been any such issues.

My computer alerted me to the trojanthingy in the first place by telling me I NEEDED TO BUY THIS PROGRAM RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW to fix a problem I didn't even know existed. I gave it my credit card number. With my luck, that thing that popped up to fix my problems was written into the virus and and now a forty-year-old man who lives in his mother's basement is buying Star Wars porn with my paycheck.

ETA: Okay wait, it's happening at LJ too. And Dreamwidth. And Facebook.

And apparently this is happening to a lot of people in the last couple days. Gaaaah.

MAYBE IT'S OKAY THOUGH.

I don't know I can't deal with this rubbish. Maybe if I ignore it it will all go away.

What was the program that your computer alerted you to buy?

I'd say cancel the card- it sounds sketchy.

I agree that you should probs cancel the card; that thing sounds like it was a scam. ):

Yeah, it probably was. And I should've known that at the start, but when I said "no thanks" and closed it, the problem was still there so I thought... eh, I don't know what I thought. Probably "OMG want internets back nao."

Something similar happened to me when my computer was envirused a few months ago, so I definitely know the "I should've known" feeling! ):

It's because we can't function without our computers. We'll try anything to keep them working.

Well, I will anyway.

Okay. First of all, are you having problems opening up any other anti-virus/anti-malware programs you might already have on your computer? The one I had wouldn't even open the programs up, because the thing like, already had a backlog of knowledge as far as programs that could kill the bug, and would keep people from being able to run them. For example, I have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, which is a beautiful wonderful thing, and I couldn't get that one to work.

I have... Norton? And it opened all right, but while I know that's a legit program I'm not altogether clear on what to use it for. And I don't know that it's up to date.

Yeah, it was probably just a matter of time before I got something like this. Cluelessness. :-/

Also if you haven't gotten it to work yet, try starting your computer in safe mode, then installing adaware from lavasoft -- it's usually very good about finding and destroying malware.

I'm not sure how to do that, but my roommate offered to take my computer to a mutual friend's while I'm at work so he can work on getting rid of the thing. So hopefully he'll be able to do something about it; he's more computer savvy than I, not that this is very difficult.

Yeah, I got it cancelled, so I think I shouldn't have anything to worry about there... that is, they may have got my fifty bucks, but they'll won't get my freedom the rest of my money.
